Lurik and Creativity

Quoting Nian S. Djoemena from her book, as the only available reference, Lurik is derived from classical Javanese word lorek, meaning stripes, or pattern. Although the weaving of Lurik is technically very simple, the colour combinations and the carefully arrangement of the stripes and square in a harmonious and balanced way, produces enchanting motifs.

Sea of creativity rest in the mind of every people, and Lurik serves countless idea even to modify the growing awareness to preserve the environment and heritage into room of women empowerment. On the other hand, touch of creativity brings closer Lurik into everyday needs of anything functional, relevant and redecorating.

Lurik needs more innovative people to develop new trends and styles. Through this tireless effort of innovation and creativity we hope to make younger generations truly enjoy the tradition of Lurik.

Women and Entrepreneurship

I was once taught that social entrepreneurship was ideally a combination of - the incremental builder (manager) - the opportunity seizer (deal maker) and the charismatic visionary (leader) plus effective team support. However, from my everyday encounter with women of thousand abilities such distinction never existed, neither by design nor as long term goal.

These women appreciate their every day opportunities as a chance to work for a better tomorrow. I found this to be very real and soon deeply internalized how entrepreneurship is not only opportunity for women to prove they can do this but also a journey to provide better living conditions for their loved ones. This motivates them to search for uniqueness, to be innovative and to trust themselves.

Despite their everyday work obligations and commitments, their talent, gifts and passion for Lurik remains true. Support and cooperation are essentials to producing quality goods. Women who have been involved in the production process have already used knowledge gained to modify the way they work.

I first met Ni Wayan Lilir at the 2008 Bali Creative Power and soon developed a good friendship with her. With the help of some international friends and colleagues Lilir was able to improve the scale of her natural home and spa products business.

I have witnessed her care, concern and skill as she explores the richness of natural ingredient for our everyday personal skincare. This gave me confident in presenting to the world some of her excellent body treatments using Lurik reusable packages.

Dorkas is a name found in the Bible. It refers to as dressmaker who made clothes for the poor in her village. As one of the program partners for the Wahana Kria Putri Foundation, I am able to tap into the authentic skill of this church-based ‘elderly mothers’ here in Denpasar, Bali. Hand knitting is not simply a skill but an enjoyable and refreshing way to help support their family.

I am not risking it all but I just want to be fair with my potential. I believe that one of the chief entrepreneurial drive is to contribute to better living conditions for our loved ones. The energy and resources dedicated to promote Lurik have created in me a lifetime passion for the magic stripes in this traditional hand woven material. One cherished memory is my wedding day on January 13th 2002 when I wore the traditional Lurik dress code of my big family.

It is my mother who is the true Daughter of Klaten. Is she had not pursued nursing education, she would not have left her place of birth and chosen a career for herself. In doing so she was able to raise choice which had raised me and three other siblings with so many life opportunities. Now during her retirement, at least once a year she goes back to Klaten especially a week prior to Holy Ramadhan month to clean up our grandparents’ cemetery.

For one year I joined the emergency and recovery efforts in Klaten after severe earthquake badly hit the area at the end of May 2006. Some parts of the area were extremely impacted and this included a number of Lurik production centres. Some charitable and development assistance has helped them regain production. Thanks to the recent trend in Indonesia of again recognizing Batik as the preferred fabric, its production has increased and leveraged the everyday household economic condition of the artisans.

Having been living in Bali as proud mother of 2 years old son with some years of experience in development work I am confident of moving forward in the pursuit of ‘creating space’ in the market for Lurik – beautiful stripes from Java. Without a shared vision, shared values and shared practices from my partner, friends and colleagues and their strong support and cooperation these creations would never materialize.

Daughter of Klaten, at the beginning of her endeavour, aims to make Lurik a centre for creativity and channel for talented women to create precious crafts.

It is with love in my heart and love for the life of others that I would like to close with a quote from a great leader inspired me not to give up and to keep moving on ‘Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.’
