Lurik and Creativity
Quoting Nian S. Djoemena on her book as the only available reference, Lurik is derived from classical Javanese word lorek, meaning stripes, or pattern. Furthermore, although the weaving of Lurik is technically very simple, the colour combinations and the carefully arrangement of the stripes and square in a harmonious and balanced way, produces enchanting motifs.
Sea of creativity rest in the mind of every people, and Lurik serves countless idea even to modify the growing awareness to preserve the environment and heritage into room of women empowerment. On the other hand, touch of creativity brings closer Lurik into everyday needs of anything functional, relevant and redecorating.

Women and Entrepreneurship
I was once taught on social entrepreneurship ideal combination of fabulous entrepreneur comes from such quality as the incremental builder (manager), the opportunity seizer (deal maker) and the charismatic visionary (leader) plus an effective team support. However, from day to day encounter with women of thousand abilities such distinction never occurred by design as goal or standard setting.
They appreciate every day opportunity as chance of enduring and basis of hope for tomorrow. I found the fact so real and then soon deeply internalized how entrepreneurship not only comes as space for women to prove they can but also road of endless venture to contribute for better living condition of their beloved ones. This motivates them to search for uniqueness, to create for innovation and to convince for trust.
What oblige to be done on day to day life will not set aside the gift, talent and ability to present everything relevant, functional and redecorate the world. Support and cooperation are essentials to generate quality of goods. While a group of woman signify the production process, effort given for woman to ensemble has already lesson learned to modify the way of work.
I first met Ni Wayan Lilir on one occasion of Bali Creative Power 2008 and soon maintaining a micro transactions as well as good friendship with her. Help from some international friends and colleagues improve the business scale of Lilir – the way people addressing her, in naturally products for home and spa.
I witness the consistency along with the advance skill on exploring the richness of natural ingredient for our everyday personal hygiene. This made me confident to present the world some of its excellent body treatment with Lurik reusable packages.
Dorkas name was found in the Bible as dressmaker who made clothes for the poor in her village. As one of Wahana Kria Putri Foundation program partner, I am able to tap on the authentic skill of this church-based ‘elderly mothers’ here in Denpasar, Bali. Hand knitting is not simply a skill but way to refresh some hours from struggle help support their family.
About Us

I am not risking it all but I just want to be fair with my potential. And more importantly, I believe as one chief entrepreneurial drive is to contribute for a better living condition of our beloved ones. The energy and resources dedicated to promote Lurik rationally compelled by lifetime passion of the magic stripes in traditional hand woven material. One cherish memory was my wedding day on January 13th 2002 with Lurik dress code of my big family.
Talking about Klaten, it is my mother the true Daughter of Klaten. Had she not pursuing nurse education, she would not leave the place and then became a career choice which had raised me and three other siblings with so many life opportunities. Now during her retirement day, at least once a year she came back to Klaten especially a week prior to Holy Ramadhan month to clean up our grandparents’ cemetery.
A year-long I joined emergency and recovery efforts in Klaten after severe earthquake badly hit the area at the end of May 2006. Some parts of the area were extremely impacted to include a number of Lurik production centres. Some charitable and development assistance has helped them regain the production. Thanks to the recent trend in Indonesia of Batik as a pick of enchanted life style has helped sustained the production and leveraged the everyday household economic condition of the artisans.
Having been living in Bali as proud mother of 2 years old son with some years of experience in development work ensures me to move forward on the pursuit of ‘creating space’ in the market for Lurik – beautiful stripes from Java. All the creations will be impossible to materialize without shared vision, shared values and shared practices from my partner, friends and colleagues for strong support and cooperation.
Daughter of Klaten at the beginning of her endeavour aims to make Lurik a lobby for creativity and channel for talent of women precious crafts.
It is love in my heart. It is life for others. And I would like to close this personal opening with a quote from a great leader inspired me not to give up and to keep moving on ‘Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.’
